God Answered Their Prayers

Doug and Beverly were both married to someone else. (Don’t worry. This isn’t one of those stories.)

Smiling couple sitting together in chairs, sharing a joyful moment during their legacy video interview.

Both of their marriages were filled with pain, and had been for decades. They had each decided to go to a church event. Both of their marriages were ending, and their spouses refused to go with them, so they found themselves sitting next to each other.

“The church event was lovely,” Beverly said, “But at the end we chatted briefly and asked if we could pray for each other.”

“It was a lovely prayer,” Doug added, “And when we left I told God I wished my marriage was as lovely as the prayer Bev just prayed for me.”

“I had the same prayer,” Beverly shared, “And that was how we met.

It was years more before they would become reacquainted and start a relationship, but this story struck me deep. As I interviewed them, I had difficulty keeping my eyes dry. It felt as if in the worst parts of their marriage God showed them a small light. Then they both prayed to experience that light, and their prayer was answered. So what came first? The light or the prayer. I do not know, and I don’t know if I ever will.

While I love a good love story, I found the divinity in this one particularly beautiful. It’s a story worth preserving for their family, and I am privileged to be the one to record their love legacy.
